History

The Ikastola was an initiative of a priest, Iñaki Garmendia, who was especially excited by the idea and committed to the establishment of the school, along with a group of local parents. 

 # 1967 #

The Ikastola began in 1967 when three preschool classrooms were opened in the parish of Aneja, in Uribarri, Bilbao.

# 1976 #

In 1976, the Diocese of Bilbao decided to erect a new building for the Ikastola. Year 1 of Primary (E.G.B.) began temporarily in the parish of San Adrián.

# 1980 #

In October 1980, made up of three preschool classes and five primary school classes, Artxandape Ikastola, as it was then known, was located in the parish of San Pablo on the banks of Deusto.

# 1985 #

In 1985, merging with Ikastola Aixerrota, another preschool which began in Asunción, Bilbao.

The Ikastola relocated to a new building with modern facilities in Uribarri. In the school year 1985/86, the first primary grade made up of 10 pupils completed their primary education.

# 1996 #

1996 saw the extension and upgrading of facilities to accommodate two new classes (Infants 2 Year-Olds and Secondary Education Year 8).

In 1998/99, the first Secondary Education grade made up of 58 pupils completed their studies.

 

There are currently 750 pupils in Infants, Primary and Secondary Education.
